Who are we?

The idea of holding the 38th IMCoS International Symposium in Brussels was initially launched, in 2019, by Hans Kok, then chairman of the IMCoS Executive Committee.

The Symposium is being organised jointly by the Brussels Map Circle and the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR), with a Symposium Organising Committee comprising:

Wouter Bracke

Curator of the Map collections at the KBR. Professor at Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). In addtion, Wouter became President of the Brussels Map Circle in 2020.

Jean-Louis Renteux

Vice-President (and founding member) of the Brussels Map Circle. Former editor of Maps in History.

Marie-Anne Dage

Member of the Executive Committee and Secretary of the Brussels Map Circle.

Pierre Parmentier

Member of the Executive Committee and Webmaster of the Brussels Map Circle.

Jan De Graeve

Member of the Executive Committee of the Brussels Map Circle. President of the Société Royale des Bibliophiles et Iconophiles de Belgique. Author of books on maps and surveying.

Luis Robles

Member of the Executive Committee and Editor of Maps in History, the magazine of the Brussels Map Circle. Luis Robles has a professional background in engineering and knowledge management, and is currently a PhD candidate in History at Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), where he is studying the life and works of sixteenth-century mapmaker Juan Vespucci. He has published research on the history of cartography and geographical discoveries. Since 2020 he has been the Editor of the Brussels Map Circle’s Newsletter Maps in History.

Paul De Candt

Member of the Executive Committee and Co-editor of Maps in History, the magazine of the Brussels Map Circle.

Hans Kok

Former chairman of the IMCoS Executive Committee. Keen map collector and co-author of two books on seventeenth century maps and atlases.
